Peyronie’s Disease – General Information

What is Peyronie’s Disease?

Curved Penis

Peyronie’s Disease is classified as a deformity caused by plaque buildup which can form inside the penis shaft. This plaque eventually develops into scar tissue, as it appears on the upper portion or lower portion of the tunica albuginea, which surrounds the majority of erectile tissue. Initially, plaque begins as a restricted inflammation and over time, progresses into a state that forms scar tissue. This type of plaque is different from other forms that accumulate in the body.

In most men with this ailment, peyronie’s disease can vary from mild to severe curvature. The physical signs of penile curvature can slowly develop or become apparent overnight. In cases regarded as severe, the solidified plaque decrease the penis’s flexibility, sometimes causing pain or discomfort and produce a bend, giving the penis a curve during an erection. It has been documented that the pain caused by a curved penis subsides over time, although the bend may continue to be a problem, often making sexual intercourse difficult or preventable.

The problems that arise from peyronies disease can directly effect sexual relationships, whether the physical portion of sex declines or the emotional state effects male self-esteem. Men who have had minor penile curvature have shown that inflammation can cease on its own without producing pain or an irreversible bend.

The formation of plaque is not malignant (infectious) or known to produce cancer. Nor is it a tumor of any kind. Their are no outbreaks of peyronies that spread and there is no evidence that peyronies is caused by a transmittable disease.

Plaque that forms on the upper portion of the shaft, the area where plaque forms more often, can cause the penis to bend towards the ground. There have also been instances where plaque forms on both the lower and upper portion of the tunica albuginea, which has the potential to indent and shorten the penis. It has been noted that a curved penis can cause pain and temperamentalizm which can forbid sexual activities.

How Do Symptoms Of A Curved Penis (peyronie’s) develop?

Research has lead many to believe that plaque buildup constitutes peyronies disease as it increases from physical trauma and inflammetory response. Hitting or contorting the penis may cause curvature from bleeding that occurs within the penis. There are two portions of soft tissue that span the length of the penis shaft, commonly referred to as the corpora cavernosa. The septum, another internal component of the shaft, runs between the corpora cavernosa, attaching near the top and bottom of the tunica albuginea.

Sometimes, when the penis is battered or warped, a portion of this area that surrounds the septum where it connects to the tunica albuginea, may expand, damaging the tunica albugenia, possibly rupturing extremely small blood vessels that partially comprise this portion of tissue.

The anatomy of the tunica albugenia is comprised of various layers. Very little blood flows through this part of the penis, which enables inflammation to entrap itself within these layers for months at a time. When this occurs, the cells that makeup this inflammation may liberate substances that can cause thickening and scarring of the tissue, thus reducing penile elasticity, causing curvature. This persistent series of events gradually forms hard lumps that form into immoderate amounts of scar tissue which then harden into deposits of calcium, depriving the penis flexibility and also producing a potential deformity.

Even though trauma explains why some men develop peyronie’s disease, there is no explanation why some cases are slower despite there being no trauma. Often, peyronie’s will fix itself, which is why medical professionals recommend waiting a year to let the body work its magic to fix itself. If this disease has stablized itself and it going no where fast, taken action immdiately.

How Can A Curved Penis Be Treated?

Medical attention is usually sought as a result of painful erections, curvature, or burdensome intercourse. Although the root causes or peyronie’s disease are not fully understood, the disease is still treated based on observation or experience rather theory or pure logic. Doctors determine the best treatment option that seems to help the most. The intent of therapy is to restore and sustain healthy sexual activity. Having a decent understanding about peyronie’s disease and the associated process is not necessary to begin treatment. Surgery is one of the evidential procedures used to treat the disease for serious cases.

Since each case of peyronie’s depends on the individual and some men react differently to treatment than others, medical professionals suggest resorting to surgery as an extreme measure. If an elective surgery candidate is willing to use a very safe and effective method, yet unproven technique to treat peyronie’s, he may be glad he chose the less expensive and much less dangerous option instead. There are a few penis extenders you may want to consider as a possible treatment, the best extender emphasized on below.

Treatments used to improve penile curvature

Small scale, independent studies have been conducted to discover various treatments options that can procure a curved penis.

Penile traction devices have been extensively researched in the case against men with peyronies disease. Assessing the capabilities of a penis extender (traction device) was done so through clinical testing and rigorous studies proving that a medical type 1 penis extender can increase penis length, width, thickness, and can also straighten penile curvature. Utilizing an enlargement device in these tests was based on individuals with a curved penis. This test portrayed data that concluded participants were able to correct curvature nearly 70%.

Results were apparent after 6 months of usage once sizable gains to both length and girth were made. The CE device used in this scenario was SizeGenetics. This study was performed by Wendy Hurn, Urology Specialist Practitioner at the Bristol Royal Infirmary.
